Pieces on Earth

It seems that the Prince of Peace was in the bathroom when the picture was taken.

85 years ago today in Tel Aviv, Arturo Tocanini conducted the first performance of the Palestine Orchestra, later called the Palestine Symphony Orchestra and eventually the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.  Informally it was known as the Orchestra of Exiles and there is a PBS documentary under that title.

Consider the original name, the Palestine Orchestra, and its political implications.  One might contend that it was of the Palestinians, for the Palestinians and by the Palestinians.  Or, were the orchestra members more exiled than Palestinian?
. . .

I realize that it may be tiresome for me to simply recount meal after meal, so I will simply highlight one dish that thrilled me today when the Ratners joined us for brunch at Dagon, 2454 Broadway, which features cuisine from “somewhere in the Mediterranean.”

One of the mezze (vorspeisen) offered at $10 each, 3 for $25, 6 for $36 is Marinated Beets with horseradish yogurt, chickpeas and crispy beef tongue (cut into cubes and served on the side).  It was a beautiful combination, red, white, yellow, brown, solid, liquid, crunchy, tart, sweet.  If they could only find a way to include chocolate chips, it would be perfection.  Everything else was fine, too, but this was worth crossing the street for.

Among the random hustles that pop up when using my smartyphone, one of the most quizzical is Birddogs, offering men's pants and shorts.  What's special is the attachment of underwear to the garment.  https://www.birddogs.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQiA5aWOBhDMARIsAIXLlkfExPAsve224e4_XzNShKxRU1G6VVVGHFEZ4gFPqOCFR7_cvdw6gAUaAvH5EALw_wcB

"The comfort of built-in underwear" is the slogan.  Well, I don't know about you, but I aim to change my underwear every day, washing the batch at the end of the week.  Yet, I can't imagine doing the same to my pants.  Who has a pair of pants for every day of the week?  Whose idea was this anyway?

Here's the plan:
  • British Airways flight to London;
  • The Capital Hotel in Knightsbridge;
  • Alan Bennett play at the Menier Chocolate Factory;
  • Dinner at Ottolenghi's Nopi restaurant;
  • Day trip to Manchester; and more.
That's what December 28th was supposed to herald.  Nope, nada, rien, gornisht, 没有什么 and that says it all.  Instead, I had lunch with Mossad Moshe at New Cottage Restaurant, 2199 Broadway, the second time that I have been to this new replacement of La Caridad 78, once the quintessential Cuban Chinese restaurant.

The place was busy at lunchtime in a neighborhood that has a woefully poor Chinese restaurants-to-Jews ratio.  It's not bad, but I wish that it had much more competition.  We shared a bland, overpriced scallion pancake ($8).  Moshe had Tofu Szechuan Style, one of 21 lunch specials at $11, including rice and a choice of soup.  I ordered Singapore Rice Noodle (mei fun), not a special ($12), but special nevertheless.  The large portion of angel hair pasta was loaded with shrimp, chicken, pork, egg, green onion, yellow onion, carrot slivers and bean sprouts dusted with curry powder.  It justifies a future visit or two to New Cottage, although avoid the $5 pot of tea.

In case your accountant has been a bit lethargic in protecting your billions, hip him/her/them to "the latest tax dodge in Silicon Valley."  https://www.nytimes.com/2021/12/28/business/tax-break-qualified-small-business-stock.html

I recommend a visit to Economy Candy, 108 Rivington Street, regardless of your interest or capacity for candy.  The colors, the variety, the sheer number of items available will dazzle you.  You might walk out without buying anything, and I have actually managed that, but you will take away a memorable sensory experience.

I retain happy memories about my first wedding ceremony, 49 years ago today.  Same cannot be said about the marriage that followed.
. . .

As you look forward to the bright new year, please note this event, which I will moderate.
